Whether you choose to hang an authentic or artificial pine Christmas wreath on your door — or an entirely different type, like ones made of paper waste or even food — chances are you've spent a year or two struggling with how to keep your decor hanging. With one easy to apply, quick to remove trick, you can skip the shiny wreath holder and any further damage to your front door.
The Problem with Traditional Hanging Methods
Typically, we rely on everything from metal wreath holders to staples, nails, and even thumbtacks to hang holiday wreaths on the door, yet each of these familiar methods causes damage over time.
Wreath holders tend to get stuck, prevent your door from closing, and can brutally hack up the doorframe. Stapling your wreath's ribbon to the top of the door doesn't work on all door types, particularly metal ones, and leaves an unsightly collection of leftover staples once the holidays are over. And when it comes to nails and thumbtacks, do you want to see a bunch of tiny holes after years of decorations?
Instead, Hang Your Wreaths from Command Hooks
Skip the old methods and try a less damaging tactic by using removable plastic hooks. With their temporary adhesive backing, you can hang any size wreath on any smooth, flat surface, whether it's your front door or kitchen cupboard door. If you can hang the wreath directly from the Command hook without the hook being visible, great. If not, there's something else you can do.
To hide the sticky hook out of sight, the trick is to hang it on the opposite side of the door, upside down. Once the hook is secured, loop your wreath's ribbon around it and drape it over the front of the door. Now, instead of staples or a metal holder rubbing against your doorframe, the only thing that'll touch wood is a thin, smooth ribbon.
Just make sure you get the right hooks for the weight of your particular wreath. For instance, if hanging the wreath on the exterior of your door, an outdoor Command hook can hold either two, three, four, or five pounds. But if you use the ribbon trick, you won't need an outdoor-type hook, so indoor ones are just fine. Like the outdoor ones, you can get two, three, four, or five-pound holds.
Can't Stand Ribbon? Hang Your Wreath Without It
A wreath that hangs from a piece of ribbon is key to hiding the sticky hook hanging it up, but if the thick, colorful ribbon isn't your style, Sew Woodsy suggests using fishing line. The clear, sturdy thread can handle the weight of a wreath and is also invisible from a short distance. Just follow the same steps and utilize an upside-down sticky hook on the inside of your door and tie the string to it.
After the holidays are over, use some Goo Gone to get rid of any remaining sticky residue after you take the plastic hooks off of your doors. If you're using Command hooks, there might not even be any.
